Find your way through the writing moderation maze
Delivered by STA trained moderator and experienced senior leader, Jo Head and supported by Sabrina Kelly, experienced Year 2 teacher and LA moderator for Key Stage 1. 
 
Friday 18th January 2019 - 9.30 am to 3.00 pm
Course 1: Unpicking Year 2 ‘pupil can’ statements and engaging young writers
Aims:
  • Communication of key STA assessment messages
  • How to inspire young writers
  • Effective teaching and learning strategies, based on best practice and pedagogy

Friday 1st February 2019 - 9.30 am to 3.00 pm
Course 2: Embedding Year 2 ‘pupil can’ statements creatively to achieve the best possible outcomes in children’s writing.
Aims:
  • How to embed STA expectations through engaging, purposeful writing opportunities
  • Opportunities for professional dialogue and sharing of good practice
  • Practical ideas for planning and delivering exciting learning experiences

Venue: Hillingdon Primary School 

Cost: £200 for both courses. The courses are designed to build on each other. However, teachers can sign up to only one course at a cost of £100. 

Number of participants: 20 places / places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Background information: These courses have been developed through the Teaching School. Teaching Schools support skilled teachers to develop courses that meet the needs of schools in their community and then offer them at a reasonable price. The cost covers course development and set up costs.

Develop skilled creative writers to secure the highest possible standards
Secure accurate writing assessment and find your way through the moderation maze 
 
Delivered by STA trained moderator and experienced senior leader, Liz Keogh and supported by Angela Smith, experienced Year 6 teacher and LA moderator for Key Stage 2. 
 
Thursday 17th January - 9.30 am to 3.00 pm
Course 1: Inspired Purposeful writing - unpicking the ‘Year 6 pupil can’ statements
Aims:
  • Understand key messages from the STA  
  • Inspire young writers through 
  • Effective writing for purpose and audience across a range of genre
  • Securing cohesion  - the why and how of cohesive devices
  • Develop the drafting process: effective teaching and learning strategies, based on best practice and effective pedagogy 
 
Wednesday 23rd January 2019 - 9.30 am to 3.00 pm
Course 2: Grammatically accurate writing - embedding  the ‘Year 6 pupil can’ statements
Aims:
  • Understand key messages from the STA
  • Develop and embed the essential skills for effective writing - every young writer’s toolkit
  • Effective dialogue
  • A range of grammatical structures
  • Appropriate vocabulary 
  • A range of verb tenses
  • Develop practical ideas for planning and delivering exciting learning experiences
  • Shared writing, facilitation and metacognition
  • Use of purposeful talk in developing children’s writing

Thursday 31st January 2019
Course 3: Assured and controlled greater depth writing -  unpicking the ‘Year 6 pupil can’ statements
Aims:
  • Understand key messages from the STA
  • Develop use of models from reading to enhance children’s writing 
  • Understand and select the appropriate register - the language of speech and writing 
  • Ensure assured and conscious control  - manipulate grammar and vocabulary
  • Accurately assess greater depth writing 
  • Articulate why writing is or is not greater depth - know the difference
  • Be prepared for moderation 

Cost: £300 for the three courses. The courses are designed to build on each other. Teachers can sign up to only one course at a cost of £100.

PLEASE NOTE: Places are limited. Confirmation of a place will be sent to the person who e-mails the booking. Please do not assume you have a place if you have not received an e-mail. Requests for places sent before 18.12.18 should receive notification before the end of term. Other requests will receive notification in the new term.
